2015 Contestant Rules

  • Top 9 Judge’s Winners and 1 People’s Choice from each Preliminary round will advance to the Semi-Finals.
  • 30 Contestants will compete in the Semi-Finals. Top Judge’s Winners and 1 People’s Choice from the Semi-Finals will advance to the Finals.
  • Contestants must be at least 18 years of age to participate.
  • Contestants must pay a $25 contestant fee at www.TexasStar-thewoodlands-prelims.EventBrite.com and www.TexasStar-Austin.EventBrite.com or on-site at the evening of each preliminary event, if not sold out.
  • For online pre-registration, completion of both the online registration form and online pre-payment must be received by noon of the day of the event. If both are not received by noon, the contestant forfeits their spot and must register in person at the venue that evening at the event, if space is available. Partial completion of the form or payment will not be accepted.
  • No refunds on contestant cancellations or no-shows for online registration.
  • On-site contestant registration for each preliminary event will begin at 6:00pm, the competition will begin at 7:30pm. Contestants must be present to register at on-site registration. No exceptions.
  • Contestants who have pre-registered online must check in by 7:00 on the designated preliminary date.
  • The first 30 contestants registered, either online or on-site combined, will be eligible to compete.
  • Each contestant will be judged on 3 categories: Vocal Strength – ability to sing the song; Entertainment Value – fun/enjoyable to watch and listen to; Accuracy/Timing – ability to get the words/timing correct.
  • Instruments are allowed and must be fully tuned with proper connections. No sound checks for instruments when entering the stage. A minimum of 85% of the performance should be vocals if using an acoustic instrument. Performances with no vocals will be disqualified from the competition.
  • Solo acts only. No group acts or additional individuals playing instruments in the background allowed. Only the contestant singing is allowed to play an instrument.
  • DWPR will approve all song choices. Contestants must refrain from inappropriate song choices, conduct and profanity. Disqualification is upon the DWPR team’s discretion.
  • Each judge will issue points on a scale of 1-10 per category giving each contestant a possibility of 30 points per judge.
  • The points will then be added together to determine the winner. There will be only 1 winner.
  • Contestants are not allowed to switch their song after registering online or in person at the event.
  • Each contestant will sing one song NO LONGER THAN 3 MINUTES in the Preliminaries and the Semi-Finals. Music will fade out after 3 minutes and contestants should exit the stage.
  • Contestants cannot repeat a song during any of the Preliminaries, Semi-Finals or Finals. All songs must be different at all events.
  • Contestants competing in the Finals will sing two different songs. There is not a time limit at the Finals.
  • The teleprompter may be used in the Preliminary competitions but not in the Semi-Finals or Finals.
  • Contestants advancing to the Semi-Finals or Finals must be present to compete. No exceptions.
  • Contestants are required to sign a photo/video release form

  • Contestants can bring their own CD of music only if their song choice is not available in the online song list. We are not responsible for technical difficulties in the event that the CD malfunctions and does not work properly during their auditions.
